Maharashtra government to make Marathi mandatory in all schools
Maharashtra government is planning to draft a law that will make “Marathi” as the compulsory subject in the schools. This will not only include state board schools but also the schools affiliated to ICSE and CBSE in the state of Maharashtra. The government will form a 14-member panel committee to prepare the draft. The panel will have education experts along with state ministers. The education department’s website will be put on suggestions and objections from the public. Agenda topics like developing a reading culture in schools, promoting Marathi language, empowerment of Marathi schools were discussed at the meeting. An official from the education department said: “Two meetings were held on the issue in June and July where representatives from the Marathi literary world and also institutions promoting the language took part”. Introducing Marathi as a compulsory subject in the school will develop a holistic culture in the school environment.
