India's higher education student population grows by 8 lakhs: HRD ministry
India’s higher education sector showed a tremendous growth as the total student population increased by 8,00,000 in 2018-19. This addition makes the total number of students to 37.4 million. The gross enrollment ratio (GER) increased from 25.8 in 2017-18 to 26.3 in 2018-19. If we say in absolute terms, the enrollment increased from 3.66 crore to 3.74 crore in 2018-19. GER is the ratio which defines the total number of students in higher education to total eligible population in age group 18-23. Even after this addition of students in higher education, the total number of female students comprises 48.6% but female student GER is slightly better (26.4) as 26.3 in male students. The GER among Schedule Cast and Schedule Tribe also grew from 18.85 in 2017-18 to 20.1 in 2018-19.
