CBSE to introduce arts in schools for classes 1st to 12th

CBSE has decided to make arts education compulsory for classes 1st to 12th. Arts education includes music, dance, theatre, visual and culinary arts. This curriculum will be introduced from the new academic session. CBSE aims to take education towards learning beyond books. Students need not to give any formal examination for this curriculum, they will be assessed through practicals and project work. CBSE has asked every school to reserve a minimum of 2 periods per week for arts education. CBSE in an official statement said “Information takes precedence over knowledge, lending itself to producing bulky textbooks, ‘quizzing’ and methods of mechanical retrieval rather than understanding and problem solving.” Introducing arts curriculum from 1st to 12th will ensure holistic and overall development in students.
